about

"always fascinating, occasionally hilarious and frequently spellbinding" The Wire - Soundcheck review, March 2017

Four Perfect Balls is a blend of speech, layers of multi-tracked free improvisation using unamplified objects and modified instruments, field recordings and computer generated synthesis. Speech content is derived from a collage of original writing and Police Training Manuals, pulp potboilers, recipes, menus and information relating to the North Sea fishing economy. These improvised interactions took place in the headphone soundstage rather than the live space. The edited results are pieces that self-subvert, gyrating between pulseless baroque pointillism, post-rock-ist incoherence and word beats.

For almost 20 years Adam and Jonathan Bohman, Panos Ghikas and Richard Thomas have worked together, as live performers in the large ensemble The Bohman Extended Family as well as in other splinter groups and ad hoc formations. This is their first LP as a quartet.
Adam and Jonathan Bohman, inimitable mainstays of the London improv scene, have been writing, recording, performing experimental music since 1975, appearing as The Bohman Brothers duo since 1996. They have regularly hosted improv events throughout London (The Bonnington, The Charteris, Café Oto, The Horse Improv club), with a long list of collaborations extending beyond the local improv scene, including filmmaker Peter Strickland.

“these banalchemists, turn everyday leaden language into poetic gold —Stewart Lee
“they will show you fear in a sponge from a drainer “ —Ben Watson, The Wire

Adam Bohman is a founding member of Morphogenesis and has received critical acclaim for his solo releases and his artwork for concert posters.

“The sound pieces sometimes shrink you to the size of a Borrower that lightbulb feels ten feet tall, the spring is what you are standing in” —Steve Beresford, Resonance

Richard Thomas has been active as a composer, performer, broadcaster and writer since the late 1980s. Between 1997 and 2001 Thomas produced three influential experimental LPs on the Lo Recordings label; Shoes And Radios Attract Paint, Seven Point Plan To Destroy Astrology and Soggy Martyrs, and the bizarre proto-Footwork LP Hairy Butter. Thomas also recorded for The Leaf Label, and Sub Rosa, working with the likes of Squarepusher, Stereolab, and Add N to X on various remixes and productions. In the NME David Stubbs called Thomas’ work a “vital new musique concréte for the 21st century”. Rob Young in The Wire Magazine called Thomas “the Welsh Sun Ra”. Since 2002 Thomas has focused on live work, work for public spaces and radio production. For ten years Thomas was the commissioning editor at Resonance FM. Thomas writes for The Wire Magazine, Electric Sheep Magazine, Art Monthly, his radio works have been broadcast internationally.

Since 2001, Adam Jonathan and Richard have worked together as Secluded Bronte. Their work is conceptual, fusing text, free improvisation, musique concréte and abstract electronic sounds. Their debut release Secluded In Jersey City (made in 2002) was published belatedly in 2014 by the American label Pogus. They are currently working on a triple LP and the film projects Against Cinema, with filmmaker James Holcombe (No.w.here), and Bronte Country with the artist Andy Holden.

Panos Ghikas is a composer, improviser and producer with and an output encompassing concert music, live improvisation, interdisciplinary collaborations in digital media, film music and pop production. He is a member of surrealist post-pop band The Chap (label mates of Richard Thomas, on Lo Recordings) and runs the Migro Records label. Panos also performs and releases with composer/improviser Jennifer Walshe; Good Teeth (2013) is their latest LP on Migro. He is also a member of the Friendo trio and Sudden Rectum. Food Coat, a duet with Steve Beresford, was featured on the Wire Tapper #39.
“It’s hard not to sound pseudish when you’re talking about music, but my love of this band is so deep that I’ll risk it”

—Ben Goldacre on The Chap
“Their output retains the sort of quick-witted inventiveness needed to transmute apparently misleading instrumental recipes into an almost tactile frolicsomeness”
—Massimo Ricci, Touching Extremes blog on Ghikas and Walshe
